MAZDA SPEC MX-5 CHAMPIONSHIP

Spec mx-5 challenge series logo

Spec MX-5 started in 2018 as a standalone grassroots championship series, and entering its seventh season in 2024. Spec MX-5 was recently adopted by the SCCA to become a National Championship eligible road racing class within the United States’ largest club racing organization. Spec MX5 is also classified to race with NASA for club racing as part of existing classes.

Spec MX-5 offers a path for both entry-level and experienced club racers to compete as either a destination class or gateway to professional racing.

The Spec MX-5 race car, a creation of Mazda Motorsports, is based on the NC-generation (2006-2015) Mazda MX-5. Spec MX5 championship is a tightly controlled spec series based on a cost-effective high-performance racecar.

The Spec MX-5 race car uses the renowned Mazda MZR engine, with a Roush CNC cylinder head and Mahle pistons (all forged internals). This provides an affordable, tightly controlled & reliable engine package. With a racing weight of 2525 lb., Spec MX-5 fits nicely in several club racing classes, specifically SCCA SMX, STL, and NASA ST5, and many endurance classes.

With its race suspension, including Penske single-adjustable shocks, Eibach springs, and the Toyo RR race tires used in the series, Spec MX-5 cars are significantly faster than Spec Miatas and T4 NC racers and just slightly slower than ND2 MX-5 Cup cars.

Mazda Motorsport provides un-matched factory technical support; they also provide racers with a very generous contingency program with over $80,000 prize fund, a $30,000 scholarship issued to the 2024 Champion, as well as on-site factory support at all 2024 SCCA Supertour race events.
